How to Check UPI Transaction Status & Get Instant Refunds?

How to Check UPI Transaction Status

To check the status of your UPI transaction, go to the transaction history. If money is debited and the recipient has not received it, the app will show a fail or pending status and a reference number. The reference number, also known as UTR (Unique Transaction Reference), is then used to track or resolve the issue with the payment.

Most UPI apps – such as Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and BHIM – allow you to view whether a transaction was sent successfully, failed or is still pending.

Banks usually automatically return the failed payment amount within 24 to 48 hours. If the refund doesn’t come on time, you can file a complaint on the NPCI UPI Dispute portal using your UTR number.

Knowing how to check your transaction and get your refund will help alleviate stress, and knowledge of the UPI app will keep your money safe.

Steps to Check UPI Transaction Status.

Always check if the transaction went through when you make a UPI payment. Sometimes, the money is debited from your bank account but not received by the other person, or it shows as pending or failed.  Here’s how you can check the status using different methods.

Method 1: Accessing Your UPI App (PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, etc.)

All UPI apps have a transaction feature built in to help you check on the transaction in a matter of seconds. This is the most direct and easiest method.

  • Step 1: Open the UPI App (PhonePe, Google Pay, etc.),
  • Step 2: Click on the Transaction History or Activity Section
  • Step 3: Find a section labelled History, Activity, Transaction, or Passbook, depending on the app.
  • Step 4: Inside this section, you will see the lists of your recent payments and receipts in chronological order.
  • Step 5: Find the Specific Transaction by scrolling back in history and finding the payment you are tracking.
  • Step 6: Tap on the Transaction for Full Details and open a detailed page.
  • Step 7: On this detailed page, you’ll see the payment amount, recipient name/number, date, time, and UPI Transaction ID (UTR number).
  • Step 8: Check the Status

The app will display one of the following:

  • Success – the money has been sent and received.
  • Pending – an issue (most likely bank or server).
  • Failed – payment was not processed.

Note: If the Status Was Pending, wait 30–60 minutes, as most transactions go through automatically.

Method 2: Looking for Evidence in Your Bank Statement

If you doubt whether money has been debited or refunded, your bank statement will contain your full record.

  • Step 1: Log in to Your Bank App or Net Banking.
  • Step 2: Open your bank’s mobile app or go to the bank’s website using your net banking login details.
  • Step 3: Go to Account Statement or Mini Statement and look for the option  Account Statement,  Transaction History, or  Mini Statement.
  • Step 4: Choose the appropriate date range (today or last 3 days).
  • Step 5: Search for UPI Transaction
  1. Use a filter option such as date, amount, or narration (look for entries with  UPI,  VPA, or the app’s name).
  2. If you have the UPI Transaction ID (UTR), you can also search quickly (while some apps let you do this).

Step 6: Check for journal entries for Debit or Refund

  1. If it is a debit (money out), you will see it as a negative transaction.
  2. If money has been refunded, you will see a credit (money back in) with a similar or the same entry found in a UTR number.
  • Step 7: Hold the reference details.
  • Step 8: If the refund has not arrived, save this statement or take a screenshot.
  • Note: The details will help if you complain to your bank or UPI app.

Steps to Get UPI Refunds Instantly

Step 1: Check whether the transaction has failed or if it was incomplete

Open your UPI app and go to your transaction history. There, look for transactions that are “Failed” or show “Pending.” These are the only ones eligible for an instant refund.

Step 2: Raise a refund request using your UPI App

Most UPI apps like PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, and BHIM will have a section labelled “Help”, “Support,” or something similar. Select the failed transaction, and follow the options to report it or to request a refund.

Step 3: Contact the bank if the app does not help

If the UPI app does not allow you to request a refund or shows you an error while doing so, call or visit the bank’s customer care service. Provide every detail of the transaction and ask the customer care operative to raise a manual refund request.

Step 4: Have your transaction details ready

You will need to provide the transaction ID, UPI reference number (UTR), the amount, and the recipient’s UPI ID. Having this information readily available will speed up the refund process.

Step 5: Make sure to follow up for the refund regularly

Most transactions flagged as failed will get refunded within 24 to 48 hours. Track them using your app and check the SMS alerts. On a pending refund, follow up with your bank and/or raise a complaint on the NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) portal.

Steps to File a Complaint for a Failed UPI Transaction

You can easily file a complaint through your app, bank, or NPCI portal to get a refund quicker.

Method 1: Using the UPI App

Step 1: Open the UPI app and find your failed transaction. Clicking on it, select Help or raise a dispute.

Step 2: Choose the appropriate reason – such as “Money debited but not credited” or “Credited to wrong account”.

Step 3: Now you can submit your complaint directly using the UPI app.

Most UPI apps give you an option to track the status of the complaint in real time.

Method 2: Contacting your Bank directly

If you don’t see the option in your app, the next best option is to contact your bank directly. You could go to the nearest branch or call the customer care number.

Now provide them the Transaction ID (UTR), amount and UPI ID. Tell them to trace the failed transaction and to raise another manual complaint for a refund.

Method 3: NPCI’s UPI Portal

Step 1: You can go to the NPCI UPI Complaints Portal.

Step 2: Fill out the required details, such as transaction ID, bank name, UPI ID, and date of transaction.

Step 3: Submit the form online, and you will receive a reference number to track the complaint status.

Conclusion.

UPI makes payments quick and easy, but sometimes technical issues can cause trouble. Always check your transaction status as soon as possible to know if it was successful or failed. If something goes wrong, use the right method to raise a complaint and follow up for a smooth refund process.
