Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) – Benefits, Eligibility & How to Apply [2025 Guide]

Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) is one of the women empowerment schemes created to address maternal health and nutrition across India.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY), the Government of India implements a maternity benefit scheme that involves providing cash support for expecting and new mothers.

Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana is a centrally sponsored scheme within the sub-scheme, ‘Samarthya’, of Mission Shakti. It provides funds through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). Under the PMMVY, ₹5,000 is given as an incentive in two instalments for the first child and ₹6,000 as a single instalment for the birth of the second girl child under the Mission Shakti Scheme Guidelines.

In 2017 the scheme was launched as PMMVY 1.0. In 2022 it evolved to PMMVY 2.0, which now includes benefits for the second girl child and has more inclusive eligibility.

The PMMVY initiative is to encourage pregnant women and lactating mothers to adopt health-seeking behaviour to improve maternal and child health outcomes across the country.

Eligibility Criteria for PMMVY

Objective of PMMVY

PMMVY is more than a cash benefit program — it is intended to change lives. The primary objectives are:

  • Encourage health-seeking behaviour: To ensure that pregnant women and lactating women receive regular check-ups and institutional delivery.
  • Assisting the girl child: Promote positive behaviour towards girl children by providing additional benefits for the second eligible child if it is a girl child.
